Clear Answers When You Need Them Most
Losing a loved one is hard enough without having to navigate legal uncertainties. If a passing was unexpected, your family might suddenly need to prove a biological relationship—most often to secure a child's rights. When you arrange post-mortem DNA testing, we coordinate with the funeral home to obtain a DNA sample from your loved one.
The living relative being tested is then scheduled for a simple cheek swab.
When is a Post-Mortem DNA Test Needed?
When a family member passes away, unresolved questions about biological relationships can create major emotional and legal roadblocks. A post-mortem DNA test gives you clear answers by establishing a definitive genetic link—most commonly paternity—after someone has died.

Families usually contact our Mesa lab for this service in one of three situations:

-
Settling Estates & Wills: If an inheritance is contested or a father wasn't legally named on a birth certificate, Arizona probate courts require an accredited, legal DNA test to determine rightful heirs.

-
Securing Government Benefits: Proving a biological connection is often the missing piece required by state and federal agencies to release life insurance policies, veteran benefits, or Social Security survivor benefits for children.

-
Finding Closure & Family History: Sometimes it isn't about court or money—it's simply about peace of mind. If there is uncertainty among surviving children about their lineage, we can help bring permanent clarity to your family history.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where can DNA be collected from? We coordinate with the funeral home to collect a sample from your loved one — typically cheek (buccal) cells, hair with the roots attached, or fingernail clippings. When hair or nails are used, more material gives a stronger result, so several samples are collected. The living relative being tested simply provides a cheek swab.
How costly is post-mortem DNA testing? Post-mortem DNA testing costs more than standard relationship testing because of the legal documentation and chain of custody involved. Our test is a flat $750, which covers coordinating collection from the deceased through the funeral home, the living relative's cheek swab, AABB-accredited processing, and your legal results report — no add-ons. Because every situation is time-sensitive and unique, this service is scheduled by phone.
