About the Syphilis RPR Blood Test
Syphilis is a bacterial infection that often shows no clear symptoms in its early stages. When symptoms do appear, they can look like a faint rash, a single painless sore, or fatigue—easy to dismiss as something else. Left untreated, syphilis can cause lasting damage to the heart, brain, and nervous system.
Arizona ranks 6th in the nation for syphilis cases, with Maricopa County reporting some of the highest case counts in the state. Routine screening is the only way to know your status.
The Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) test is a blood test that detects the antibodies your body produces in response to a syphilis infection. It's the standard screening test used by health departments nationwide. Quick Test Health Services performs the blood draw at our Mesa lab and sends your sample to a partner laboratory for analysis.
Who Should Get Tested
Anyone with a new sexual partner or multiple partners
Anyone with an unexplained rash, sore, or skin change
Pregnant women (required prenatal screening)
Anyone whose partner tested positive

If you're not sure which test you need, walk in and ask. Our staff will help you decide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can syphilis be cured? Yes. Syphilis is curable, especially when caught early — it's treated with antibiotics, usually penicillin. If your result is positive, we can connect you with telehealth treatment options so you can start care quickly and privately. Early treatment also prevents the serious complications untreated syphilis can cause.
What does a syphilis blood test detect? The RPR (rapid plasma reagin) blood test screens for antibodies your body produces in response to a syphilis infection. It's a quick, standard first-step screen. If the result is reactive, we run a confirmatory treponemal test to verify, so you get an accurate answer. Results reach you within 24 to 48 hours.
How soon after exposure can syphilis be detected? Syphilis is usually detectable about three to six weeks after exposure, once your body has produced enough antibodies for the RPR test to pick up. If you test earlier than that, a negative result may not be conclusive, so we may recommend retesting a few weeks later to be sure.
