About the HSV-1 & HSV-2 Blood Test in Mesa
Worried about exposure but have no symptoms? You don’t need a visible outbreak to get definitive answers at our East Mesa lab. Herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). While HSV-1 typically causes oral cold sores and HSV-2 is generally associated with genital infection, both types can appear in either location. Because herpes often spreads when no symptoms are present, most people carrying the virus are unaware of their status.
Our blood test screens for both HSV-1 and HSV-2 IgG in a single draw, detecting IgG and IgM antibodies that confirm past or current exposure. Because the test reads your immune response rather than active sores, it works even when you have no outbreak. That makes it the right choice for confirming an exposure, screening before a new relationship, or simply knowing your status.
Results come back from the reference lab in 24–48 hours, delivered privately to your secure patient portal.
Tested Positive? You're Not Stuck.
A positive herpes result is far more common than most people realize—and very manageable with the right ongoing care. While we don't manage long-term herpes treatment in-house, we can review your results with you, answer your questions about what they mean, and help you understand your next steps. Most patients work with their primary care provider, OB-GYN, or an infectious disease specialist for ongoing antiviral therapies. Ask us at your visit if you'd like to discuss your results.
Herpes Testing FAQ:
What People Ask Before Walking In
What does a positive herpes result mean? A positive result means you've been exposed to the herpes virus. Herpes is very common and very manageable — it isn't curable, but daily or as-needed antiviral medication controls outbreaks and lowers transmission risk. If you test positive, we can connect you with telehealth treatment so you can start care privately.
Do I need active sores to be tested for herpes? No. Our herpes test is a blood test that detects HSV-1 and HSV-2 antibodies, so it works even when you have no sores or symptoms. That makes it useful for routine screening or peace of mind after a possible exposure. Secure results reach you within 24 to 48 hours.
What's the difference between HSV-1 and HSV-2? Both are herpes simplex viruses. HSV-1 most often causes oral herpes (cold sores) but can affect the genitals, while HSV-2 is the usual cause of genital herpes. Our test is type-specific, meaning it tells you which virus you've been exposed to, not just whether you're positive.
