A urine test is one of the easiest ways to check for the most common bacterial and parasitic STDs.

Chlamydia: the most commonly reported STD, and usually silent.
Gonorrhea: often found with chlamydia, which is why they're tested together.
Trichomoniasis (trich): the most common curable STD, and often left off basic tests.
What Is Trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis, or trich, is caused by a tiny parasite passed during sex.
According to the CDC, about 70% of people with trich have no symptoms. When symptoms appear, usually 5 to 28 days after exposure, women may notice itching, irritation, or unusual discharge with a strong odor, and men may feel burning after peeing or ejaculating. Trich is curable with medication, and because it's so often silent, it's worth including in a routine check.

How Accurate Is an STD Urine Test?
Our lab uses a PCR test that looks for each infection's genetic material.
For men, urine is the recommended way to test. For women, urine is a reliable screening option, though according to the CDC, a vaginal swab can catch slightly more infections. A urine test checks for genital infections only. If you've had oral or anal sex, ask us about the right test for your situation.
How Soon After Exposure Should I Test?
Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trich usually show up about 1 to 2 weeks after exposure.
If you have symptoms, come in now. If it's only been a few days and you feel fine, waiting a week or two gives the most accurate result.
Common Questions
Can I pee before an STD urine test? Try not to pee for at least an hour before your visit. Your sample should be the first part of your urine stream, which gives the most accurate result.
Can a urine test detect HIV, syphilis, or herpes? No. Those are found in blood, not urine. For those, choose the Basic STD Panel or the Comprehensive STD Panel, which use a quick blood draw.
