What Does a Comprehensive STD Panel Test For?
A comprehensive STD panel in Mesa, AZ is one visit that tests for seven common sexually transmitted infections:
HIV, herpes 1 and 2, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. For HIV, we use a lab antigen/antibody test, which can find an infection earlier than a rapid fingerstick test. According to the CDC, STDs often cause no symptoms, so testing is the only way to know for sure.
This panel does not include herpes, trichomoniasis, HPV, or Mycoplasma genitalium.

Chlamydia and Gonorrhea
These two bacterial infections are often found together, so we test for both from the same urine sample.
Most people with chlamydia never notice symptoms. When they do appear, it's usually one to three weeks after exposure, as burning when you pee or unusual discharge. Gonorrhea symptoms, if any, tend to show up within about two weeks, and women often have none at all. Left untreated, both can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and fertility problems.
Syphilis and HIV
Syphilis usually starts with a small, painless sore about three weeks after exposure, though it can appear anywhere from 10 days to 3 months later. Because it doesn't hurt, it's easy to miss, and it heals on its own while the infection keeps going. A blood test finds it, and it's curable, especially when caught early.
Some people get flu-like symptoms two to four weeks after HIV exposure, like fever, sore throat, or a rash, but many notice nothing. Our lab HIV test looks for both the virus's proteins and your antibodies, so it can usually detect infection within about six weeks. HIV is very manageable with treatment today, and knowing early makes the biggest difference.
Herpes 1 and 2
Herpes is very common, and most people who have it don't know.
When symptoms do appear, it's usually as small blisters or sores 2 to 12 days after exposure, but many people never have an outbreak. Your blood test checks for antibodies to both types: type 1, usually linked to cold sores, and type 2, usually linked to genital herpes. Antibodies can take up to about three months to show up, so if your exposure was recent, ask us whether to retest later. Herpes can't be cured, but it's very manageable.
Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C
Both viruses affect the liver, and both can go years without symptoms.
When hepatitis B does cause symptoms, like tiredness, stomach pain, or yellowing skin, they usually appear around three months after exposure. Your test can also show whether you're protected by the vaccine. Most people with hepatitis C have no symptoms at first.
According to the CDC, every adult should be tested for hepatitis C at least once, and most infections today can be cured.
