About This Test Valley fever (coccidioidomycosis) is a fungal infection caused by Coccidioides, a fungus native to the desert soil of Arizona, California, and the southwestern United States. It spreads through airborne soil particles — most commonly from construction dust, agricultural activity, or high desert winds. Arizona accounts for the majority of all U.S. valley fever cases annually, and the Phoenix metro area, including Mesa, is among the highest-risk regions in the country. This panel detects IgM and IgG antibodies to Coccidioides in the blood — IgM appears early in infection, while IgG persists and can be used to monitor severity or treatment response. Many valley fever cases are initially misdiagnosed as bacterial pneumonia or influenza because the symptoms — fatigue, cough, fever, chest pain, and joint aches — are nearly identical. Testing is the only way to confirm it. Who This Test Is For Arizona residents or recent visitors experiencing cough, fatigue, fever, or chest pain that hasn't resolved with standard treatment for bacterial pneumonia. Anyone who has worked outdoors in desert environments — construction, agriculture, landscaping, excavation — in the past 1–6 months and developed respiratory or flu-like symptoms. Immunocompromised individuals (HIV, organ transplant recipients, those on immunosuppressants) who are at higher risk for severe disseminated valley fever. Anyone with unexplained joint pain, rash, or meningitis symptoms in the context of recent Arizona exposure. What to Expect & Preparation Preparation: No special preparation needed. Fasting is not required. Your Lab Visit: A quick blood draw, about 15 minutes. Walk in Monday–Friday, 7 AM–5 PM, or book online. No doctor's order or insurance required — we generate the lab order at check-in. FSA and HSA accepted. Turnaround Time: Results are posted to your secure patient portal within 3–5 business days. If you pay for a test online and later realize you have an employer code or third-party payment, no refunds will be issued — store credit only. Recollections: Blood work is sometimes delayed in transit, lost, or needs to be recollected.
