What the Extended Opiates 5-Panel Detects
The 5-Panel Hair Follicle with Extended Opiates is the right choice when you need to detect semi-synthetic prescription opioids—substances the standard 5-panel can miss.
It includes everything in the standard 5-Panel plus four additional opioids commonly prescribed:
Plus Extended Opiates:
-
Hydrocodone (Vicodin, Norco, Lortab)
-
Hydromorphone (Dilaudid)
-
Oxycodone (OxyContin, Percocet)
-
Oxymorphone (Opana)
When to Choose This Test
The standard 5-panel detects natural opiates (codeine, morphine, and heroin) but does NOT reliably detect semi-synthetic prescription opioids like Vicodin, OxyContin, or Percocet. Those are the most commonly prescribed and most commonly misused painkillers in the U.S.
If you're screening for:
-
Prescription opioid monitoring (PHP, FAA HIMS, professional licensing)
-
Family court or custody cases involving prescription drug history
-
Sober living programs after opioid recovery
-
Employer concerns about prescription painkiller use
The Extended Opiates panel is the right test. Test results are sent to you in 3-5 days.

Who Uses the 5-Panel Extended Opiates Test
-
Professional Licensing Programs — PHP, FAA HIMS, nursing board, attorney compliance with prescription opioid history
-
Family Court & Custody — When prescription painkiller use is part of the dispute
-
Sober Living Programs — Opioid-specific recovery monitoring
-
Employers — Safety-sensitive roles where opioid impairment is a concern
-
Personal Recovery Verification — Self-monitoring during opioid recovery

5-Panel Extended Opiates FAQ
Why does the standard 5-Panel miss prescription opioids? The standard 5-Panel only detects natural opiates (codeine, morphine, heroin). Semi-synthetic opioids like Hydrocodone (Vicodin), Oxycodone (Percocet), Hydromorphone (Dilaudid), and Oxymorphone (Opana) require separate testing. The Extended Opiates panel adds those four substances to the standard 5-Panel.
Will a prescription medication show up on this test? Yes — if you've taken any prescription opioid in the past 90 days, it will likely show up. The test detects the substance, not whether you have a prescription for it. If you have a valid prescription, bring documentation so you can provide context when sharing results.
How long does the 5-Panel Extended Opiates test take? The hair collection takes under 5 minutes. Lab analysis takes 3 to 5 business days, with results posted to your secure patient portal.
