What's the Difference Between a 1-Step and 2-Step TB Test?
A 1-step TB test is a single PPD skin test placed once and read 48–72 hours later. A 2-step TB test repeats the process—two placements, 1 to 3 weeks apart, each with its own reading—to catch older TB exposure a single test can miss. Healthcare employers and nursing schools require the 2-step as a baseline for new workers.
Your 2-Step Timeline
Visit 1 — today. Walk in; first PPD placed. Takes about 15 minutes from the moment you sit down.
Visit 2 — in 48 to 72 hours. Quick reading of your first test. In and out.
Visit 3 — 1 to 3 weeks after Visit 1. Second PPD placed.
Visit 4 — 48 to 72 hours later. Final reading, and you walk out with signed documentation for your employer, school, or compliance portal. *Please note we do not perform TB skin tests on Thursdays.
Why Do Employers Require the 2-Step?
A 2-step TB test in Mesa shouldn't feel like a hurdle—but the schedule confuses almost everyone, so here's the plain version.
If you were exposed to TB years ago, your immune system may not respond as strongly. A single skin test might miss it. The first test essentially "wakes up" your immune memory; the second test, placed one to three weeks later, catches the boosted response. That's why hospitals, nursing schools, home health agencies, and long-term care facilities require the 2-step as your baseline before your first shift or clinical rotation.
After your baseline 2-step is documented, most employers require only a single-step test each year going forward.

2-Step TB Skin Test FAQ
What is the difference between a 1-step and 2-step TB test? A 1-step TB test is one PPD placement read 48–72 hours later. A 2-step TB test adds a second placement 1 to 3 weeks after the first, each with its own reading, to detect older TB exposure a single test can miss. Quick Test in Mesa offers both, walk-in.
How many visits does a 2-step TB test take? Four short visits over one to three weeks: your first placement, its reading 48–72 hours later, a second placement 1 to 3 weeks after the first, and its final reading. Each visit at our Mesa lab takes about 15 minutes from the moment you sit down.
Can I get a 2-step TB test without an appointment? Yes, Quick Test is a walk-in lab. Come by Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday, 7 AM to 5 PM, and your first placement happens the same day. No doctor's order or insurance card needed; we provide the documentation your employer or school requires. * Please note there is no TB placement on Thursdays.
