That is why nursing programs, dental and medical schools, hospitals, and clinical sites require documented proof of immunity. They need it before you work around patients, needles, or specimens.

The requirement is not paperwork for its own sake. It protects you and the patients you will be treating.

A quantitative titer is the fastest way around that, because it documents your protection with a number nobody can dispute.
WHAT THIS TEST DOES NOT TELL YOU
This is an immunity test, not an infection test.
A surface antibody titer cannot tell you whether you currently have hepatitis B. It measures protection, not active infection. If your concern is possible exposure rather than a compliance requirement, the test you want is the hepatitis B surface antigen test, which is the standard screen for a current infection.

The two are easy to confuse because the names are nearly identical. If you are not certain which one your situation calls for, tell our staff what you were asked for and we will point you to the right test.
IF YOUR TITER IS LOW
A low or non-reactive result is common, and it is not a failure.
Antibody levels simply drop below the protective line over the years, and that happens to most people eventually.
If your result comes back under 10 mIU/mL, take your lab report to your medical professional for a booster dose. Your program may then ask for a repeat titer to confirm.
